Symptoms, diagnosis and causes

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a psychiatric illness that usually affects children and adolescents and can persist into adulthood.

As with all mental illnesses, the symptoms of ADHD can vary in severity. A disorder is present when comparable symptoms are present and significant psychosocial impairment in more than one area of life (e.g. academic or occupational performance or interpersonal relationships) persists for more than six months. ADHD is a cross-situational pattern of irregularities that often manifests itself in three areas of behaviour (the so-called core symptoms): Inattention, hyperactivity and impulsive behaviour.
ADHD is diagnosed using a comprehensive diagnostic procedure that usually involves several professional groups. Possible causes for the symptoms, accompanying symptoms and possible secondary illnesses are ruled out and identified in detailed diagnostic examinations.

ADHD is often treated with behavioural therapy, information and education for those affected and their relatives, as well as medication. Drug treatment is carried out using various preparations to alleviate the symptoms. These are usually daily medications that are intended to have both inhibitory and stimulating effects on the brain.

The modulating effect of cannabinoids in the central nervous system can help to alleviate the symptoms of ADHD.

Many adult ADHD patients state that cannabis therapy makes them calmer and more focussed and make maintaining concentration easier, which helps them to adapt better to normal life. In this context, a significant improvement in hyperactivity and impulsivity is reported, without negative effects on cognitive abilities. Cannabis medicine can therefore be a therapeutic module for ADHD to increase performance and improve quality of life.

* The treatment decision is made by cooperating doctors during the initial consultation. Remote treatment is not possible in every case. The prerequisites are compliance with recognised professional standards within the meaning of Section 630a of the German Civil Code (BGB) (taking into account scientific findings, medical experience that is necessary to achieve the medical treatment objective and has proven itself in trials) and the determination that, depending on the clinical picture, no personal contact between doctor and patient is necessary.
